What is a painting of a scene with people who are not posed called!? Like a photographic snapshot but a painting!. When a painter paints people going about their everyday business!.

Is there even a name for this!? I don't think it would be a portrait or a still life!.

Thanks ahead of time!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it's 'genre'!. The Dutch were very fond of them (Pieter de Hooch etc) and also the Victorians!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes,I would say so!. It might be a street scene, or in a shop, on a beach or at a swimming pool, but basically the people are doing what ever they are doing rather than posing!. This style is "an everyday scene" and the title of the picture would depend on the scene!. I have just finished a street scene called "Old lady with trolley!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

This type of painting is called "a social gathering study" but that's being really specific!. on the back of a $2!.00 bill you'll find that very type of scene!. also, I'd be looking up Robt!.De Chatelene and or Eduard Cortez!. all thos artists do the same type thing!. Of course there are many such paintings found in the works of the 17th,18th, 19th and especially 20th century!. if you'll look at lithographs from the late 1800s and early 1900s you'll see exactly what you're looking for!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you had said 'photo' I would have hastened to answer 'candid'!. But a painting!? I'm baffled!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
