A ceramic kiln is normally set up to bring the objects inside up to a temperature then just let the heat fall away!.

A glass kiln brings the objects up to temperature then anneals the glass by slowly bring the heat down!. Annealing reduces the stress in the glass making it less likely to break!.

The annealing time is chosen by the type of glass and the thickness of the glass!. The thicker the glass the more time needed to safely bring it to room temperatureWww@QuestionHome@Com

A kiln is a large oven used for "Cooking" the moisture out of clay when making, bowls, sculptures etc!.

They get extremely hot! and suck out excess moisture from the material, hardening it for use!.

oops didn't see the rest of your question!. Not sure if they lower temp well and that's the trick or not!.

I do know that things can crack and break in a kiln, especially if there are any air bubbles, although some pieces may crack while others are fine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A kiln is built with materials and elements to go to a temperature over 2000F!. It doesn't just take the moisture out of clay it actually reforms the silicon bonds to vitrify (make glass like) the materials in the clay!.
Pottery is normally allowed to cool in a closed kiln!.
Glass requires a controller (normally) that will keep the glass from cooling too quickly and holding at certain points!. http://users!.ticnet!.com/mikefirth/sitema!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
