Question: Removing a painting from the frame and rolling it up!?
On a trip overseas with my aunt, she bought a framed painting!. The seller took the canvas out of the frame, rolled it up, and took the frame apart so it was four separate pieces!. What are the pros and cons of rolling up a painted canvas!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Depends how the painting was painted and when!. Older paintings over 30 years old with heavy impasto or glazing that were painted in oil can have some paint crack when rolled and than unrolled!. The painting should be rolled loosely and always with the paint to the outside not inside of the roll!. If it is acrylic or watercolor it should not have as much damage if rolled incorrectly!. But I would not keep it in the tube for too long because you can have mold settle on the canvas if the conditions are moist!. When you unroll the painting do it carefully and don't be surprised that the painting will not fit on the old frame, it might have to be re framed on new stretcher bars!. Try to get somebody that re stretched a painting before so you won't tear it or damage it!. I hope it helps and your aunt will enjoy the paintingWww@QuestionHome@Com

The pros for rolling it up is that it's easy to store and travel with!. The cons are if you leave it rolled up (or in a cardboard or other heavily acidic tube) it can damage the painting once it is re stretched!. But if it's a fairly new painting it should be fine!. it would take a long time or a high amount of acid for that to affect it!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

A thing that concerns me about your aunt and her trip!?!.!.!.!."it was overseas"!.!.!.!.In being an artist for the past 33 years ( for a living ) means that I have also been a framer as well!.!.( that should be enough said but it isnt) alot of overseas galleries make their entire livings off of tourists and inevitably one tourist will come home with the paint coming off the canvas in patches and they end up being very upset!. I'd like to think that all Americans are pretty savvy about buying things abroad but the truth is!?!.!.!."we're mostly not savvy"!.!.!.!.!.Ok, the pros!?!.!.!.!.like a previous answerer said "convienience"!.!.!.!.the cons!?!.!.!.!."damage" and sorrow!.!.!.!.!.it is never a good idea to take a painting off the stretchers because that's the way it's painted and re-mounting it or re-stretching it means it isn't going back the same way it went on!.!.!.!.!.!.But hey, she bought it and that's what apparently happened right!?!.!.!.!.water under the bridge,!.!.!.!.!.I think I'd just try not and do this again!.!.!.!.!.!.!.hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
