Question: How important are the lenses!?
So I have about $700 and I heard that lenses are way more important than the body itself!. Should I buy a $700 camera with a kit lens or a $400 camera with a $300 lens!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Mere Mortal is 100% correct!. Think of your lens like the tires on a car!. You can have the best car in the world, but if you put totally worn out, wrong tires on it, the car is worthless!.

Your lens is the body's "window to the world"!. If the body is forced to work through a crap lens, then you will have poor results!. Any newish SLR body is an excellant item, spend your money on the best quality lens you can get!.

Yes, primes are great, but most people want a zoom lens for more versatility!. A fixed aperture zoom lens will cost MUCH more and be MUCH larger and heavier than a variable apeture lens, but in the long run it is worth the extra cost!. Nothing will drive you nuts more than the aperture changing on you as you zoom the lens, plus you will have great difficulty in dim conditions when the lens closes down at the long focal range!.

I will disagree with mere mortal on a point!.

Although lenses are of primary importance (the word camera only means box), if you spend 700 bucks on a camera and 400 bucks on a lens, what you can do with your camera is limited!. I would purchase the kit, and some are available in that price range with two lenses, and then save up and get the prime lenses that you find that you need as you need or want them!.

The lens that you will use the most will be one that on a 35mm format would be either a 28-70mm or a 35-70mm and the next one would be from 70-200 or 70-300!. Those are all purpose lenses and you will be using them ad infinitum!. If you are into portrait work, or think you will be, then an appropriate lens would be nice, but wait for it!.

Its all about the lens!.

Primes (fixed focal length like a 20mm, 50mm, 100mm, etc!.) rank as the sharpest and most desirable and are always the fastest (f1!.4, f2)!.

Zoom lenses rank second and some rival primes for sharpness!. The fastest zooms are seldom less than f2!.8 and constant aperture zooms are the most desirable!.

DSLR camera bodies will be replaced every 2 to 3 years!. Lenses last a lifetime barring accidents or theft!. I own several primes that are well over 30 years old and still performing perfectly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lenses are certainly important, but if your budget is only $700, you are going to get more bang for your buck with a kit!.

For example, according to current prices on Amazon!.com, you can get a Canon Digital Rebel kit for $654!. This is pretty much the least expensive Canon Digital SLR!. It includes an 18-55mm lens!.

You can get the Digital Rebel camera body only for $579, but if you buy the same lens that is in the kit, it costs $170!. A better lens is only going to cost more!.

So!.!.!. you save close to $100 by starting out with the kit!.

You can always add more lenses later, as you are able!. Lenses you can buy used, but I wouldn't recommend buying a used camera body!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

All cameras have pretty good lenses these days!. Good lenses are much cheaper than they used to be, because of the way they're made nowadays!.

Yes, the lens is very important, but it is only one part of the camera!. If the shutter sticks, or the electronics are flaky, a good lens doesn't do much for you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Glass is always important!. Indeed, the most important!.

If you are investing in a FF body then the world of glass completely opens up for you!. Always buy the best you can afford!.

Always stay with primes, if you have to have a zoom make sure it is highly rated and has a fixed f/2!.8 aperture!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
