Ok, a couple of things!. Fotoz is correct in that you can use a larger filter to guard against vignetting!. He is somewhat mistaken on something though!. He gave as an example that if you have a 77mm lens to get a 82mm filter and a STEP DOWN RING!. That is incorrect!. You would purchase a STEP UP RING!. All these adaptors are labeled from LENS TO FILTER size!. So if the filter is larger than the lens, it is a step up ring!. If the lens is larger than the filter, it would be a step down ring!. So if a ring is labeled 46 - 77, it means it adapts a 77mm filter to a 44mm lens ring mount!.

Ok, another item!. Using these rings will not allow you to mount your standard bayonet mount lens hood!. I ALWAYS use a hood, and feel everyone should to guard against flare!. So in order to use a hood with the step up ring, you would need a screw on lens hood to fit into the threads of the filter!.

Another item!. Vignetting is seldom an issue if you use ONLY ONE filter!. It is when you start stacking filters that you can get into trouble!. You can even buy very thin filters for use with wide angle lenses to further guard aganist vignetting!.

But going the large filter and step up ring route is a good idea!. It is much cheaper to just buy another ring if you get a different size lens rather than having to buy a new set of filters!. Just remember, you will need to purchase a screw on lens hood also!.

YES, emphatically so!.

Consider the largest lens you have!. if it's a 77mm get an 82mm with a step down ring!. you can also purchase a cap for the 82mm if you plan to walk around with it during your photo opportunity to protect it from any abrasive elements!.

It's especially important when using wider angle lenses that the polarizing lens exceeds the outside dimension of the wide angle lens to minimize any vignetting!.

You're right on in thinking of this!.
