I've painted with acrylics before but now paint with oils!. I've never taken a painting class (though i probably would have if i could) but what i did do was go to my local library and check out their books on painting to learn the basics!. Always checking out as many as possible to get different points of view and techniques because no one books has all the answers!. As i learned, practiced, and got better, i would check out books and and try out more advanced techniques!. No, you don't really need a class to get you started so, study, practice, and have fun!. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio!.com under artist name GUERRO1!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've taken several art classes, one of which was focused solely on acrylics!. It really isn't necessary, though if you are not so much of a natural once you try it, you may have trouble!.

If you are good at other art things already, and no the basics of composition and figure representation, then you should be fine!. Or you could do abstract, and for some of that you don't really need anything!.

Just make yourself do certain exercises!. Like do squares of paint where you go from black to the lightest gray, trying to blend as smoothly as possible (gradients)!. Do this with other colors as well!. Try making different colors!.

Then pick something that you have drawn before, and paint it!. You can start with a drawing on the canvas (very light drawing - I also suggest canvas paper, which is cheap - they have it like actual paper which is lame or canvas that is not on a canvas board and comes in 10 or 20 sheet packages)!. Do your basic shapes!. Paint a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, a cone!. Add in the shadows!. Do it blended, not blended!. Then try making some real paintings and see how you do :)!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Shouldn't need a class, but it totally helps big time!.

The way I started was getting some primaries (Red, Yellow, Blue, white, NO BLACK unless you want the color mudded!. :/ ), some brushes, and a plastic palette, and just went to town on a canvas!.

Good thing about acrylic is, you can just paint over a used canvas with a background color and no one will be the wiser!.

I highly recommend experimenting a bit, and after that think about if you need a class or not!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well i guess you don't need a class!.!.!. but i highly recomend it! Taking a class will teach you all the steps, techniques, etc!. With acrylics you don't just start painting and mixing colors, you have to kind of work in layers or painting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You don't need a class to start painting things!. Just go out and paint something that you like!. Parks are nice!. You could also take a camera and take a picture of something and then try to paint the image from the picture!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Just do it!.
I started oil painting without any classes!. I would recommend buying a book or video when you buy your paints !.Www@QuestionHome@Com
