There is not really any best brand!. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages!. also depends on what you are wanting!. 35mm point&shoot, digital point &shoot, 35mm slr or digital slr, medium format or large format, or a view camera!. Nikon and Canon are leaders in the prosumer market right now!. For the small format (35 mm and digital equivalent!. The best way to buy a camera is go to a regular camera shop (not walmart or best best buy), a regular camera shop that sell nothing but photography equipment!. And hold one, see how the controls work and if they work in a way that is natural to you, see if the camera fits your hand and feels comfortable!. The people that work in a regular camera are generally very knowledgeable and will be able to answer any questions you have and can make objective recommendations!. You might even be able to find a deal on some used cameras there as ,most have a used equipment section!. That is the best way to a good informed buying decision!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Since there is only ONE person who posted this thus far, let me support the opinion that there is no best brand!. It is entirely dependant on your requirements and expectations!. I would also like to say film cameras trump digital for beginners, and film is still used by many professionals as well!. Digital may be easier and faster, but the quality film produces is at this point unmatched!. Digital is coming close, but people have to learn not to care about megapixels!. Read this - http://forum!.deviantart!.com/galleries/ph!.!.!.

Full-manual film is my choice and recommendation!. For a 35mm SLR look into:
Fujica ST801
Minolta X-700
Canon AE-1

For range-finders (also usually 35mm), see http://forum!.deviantart!.com/galleries/ph!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Leica, Mamiya and Arca Swiss are tops!.

Wista and Hasselblad are up there as well!.

The very best camera for a beginner has to be the Mamiya RB67!. Basic, well made, and produces outstanding images!.

The RB67 sells regularly for under $200 with a prime and back!. The resulting scanned files beat any digital available today priced under $7000!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
