The ferrule that connects brush hair to the handle was traditionally made from the hollow "tube" of a large feather quill!. You can substitute a plastic or thin metal tube, depending on what paint will be used (plastic is not suitable for cleaning with solvent)!. The hair is inserted halfway into the ferrule and glued with water-resistant glue, and the handle is glued into the other end!.After gluing, the ferrule is wrapped tightly with copper wire!. Remember your glue will also have to withstand any soap or solvent used to clean paint off the brush!.

A good hair brush is formed from the tips of the hair down - in other words, the tips of the hair is never trimmed!. "Camel hair" brushes are actually made from pony hair, so horse hair will work just as well, maybe a bit coarse!.

It's a lot of work to make a good brush, but good practice - I know some artists who make their own squirrel brushes (from road kill - eww)!. You'll soon appreciate why some brushes are so expensive!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

top of the line brushes are made from sable or hog hair they are weight out and process is not easy I use a lot of 0003 sable and they are costly but I can paint in oil us$ 100!.00 bills so you get what you pay for!.I am in fine detail, but if your art can be express with horse hair then go for it ,so some time it not how but what!. glue alum soda canWww@QuestionHome@Com

A home made brush just isn't a practical thing to make!. Horse hair would not be very good!. The hairs are too coarse!. Moreover, connecting the hair to the handle would be a problem!. Wrapping and twisting copper wire to attach the hairs would be a solution but the whole thing would be impractical!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
