Question: What can I use to build a textured undercoat on a canvas!?
I would like to build up my canvas with something that is water-based, thick, dries quick and will give it some texture!.!.!.!.as an undercoat for oil painting!. Can anyone suggest a product that would be good for this, and will not cause any problems over time!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are gel mediums that you can mix with some pigment or use alone!. There is carvable medium, matte gel medium, black lava gel, mineral gel and garnet gel!. If you go to an art supply store they sometimes have samples of how this looks!. Liquitex, Golden and Winsor Newton all make gel mediums!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

dry wall compound, though the finished product would need to be sealed!.

You could also take newspaper, blend it into a pulp and use it as well!. that would have to dry completely 2-3 days!. i use it as a sculpting medium, it has great texture!.

You could also get textured paint, spray it on for a grainy look!.
paper mache
plaster dipped fabric
strips of textured fabric glued down on the canvas!.
