In the early sixties the "pill" was introduced to the women and it literally freed them from unwanted pregnancies and the whole sexual revolution was created by this one little pill!. That changed a good deal of the attitudes in the social structure of the day!.
I remember the fifties (barely as I was born in fifty-four) but the sixties are still crisp in my memory!. I remember the music changing dramatically and the attitudes towards women was rapidly changing as they became more and more independent!.
The roots of the women's independence actually came from Adolf Hitler!. His actions took all the men from both Europe and North America into a war and left the homeland to the ladies!. They got a damn good taste of a pay-cheque and obviously passed it on to their daughters!. Hundreds of thousands of women were really pissed off after the war as they had to give over to the returning soldiers and they lost their jobs!. That meant that there was no pay-cheque, a lot less freedom and independence was eroded by the lack of job and pay!. I think that in the fifties the resentment was passed on to their daughters!.
By the sixties with the advent of the pill, the technological advancements and the social upheaval from the universities concerning the wars and the authorities both the men and the women who came of age in those two decades had seen enough of "the good old boys" game and wanted change!.
The media is the message and the media at the time was television and music!. The British invasion of "rock and roll" exploded onto the international scene and with The Beatles leading the advant garde the rest of the western world followed and music began asking a lot of questions!. Songs like "Lightfoot's" "Black Day in July", and Crosby, Stills and Nash with Young singing about the campus debacle in Ohio was heard all over!. These type of songs were being aired constantly and the social structure was not immune to it!. We were screaming blue murder at rallies, and universities as well as the political scene!.
We wanted " Peace, Love and Understanding" we got a dose of reality instead!.
We grew out of the sixties and into the seventies and found ourselves supporting children and living in the suburbs and life's priorities became family, shelter, food, clothing and the basics in life to keep us alive!. We matured into parts of what we distrusted!.
But there are still some of us who have the rebel inside of us and when a young group covers one of the old standards our memories are tweaked and we can recall a great change that came in the sixties!.
There's an old cliche' now that says "if you remember the sixties !.!.!. you weren't there"! Well actually, if you do remember the sixties it's because you were there participating and you remember what it was!.
