Not to worry!. Photoshop can work in any of the formats you mentioned, and can convert from one to the other by using the "Save As" function!.

Of course, if you add layers and/or text the program will automatically convert from jpg to PSD!. But it's easy enough to convert it back when you're done editing using "Save As" and choosing jpg!. This, of course, flattens the image, since jpgs can't have layers!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have PE 6!.0 on my computer right now!. It can open JPEG's!. It generally defaults to JPEG, but it can deal with many file types!. You can use "Save to" as described by Jim to save in:
Photoshop - !.PSD !.PDD
Bitmap - !.BMP !. RLE !.DIB
Compuserve GIF - !.GIF
Photo Project Format - !.PSE
Photoshop EPS - !.EPS
JPEG - !.JPG !.JPEG !.JPE
JPEG 2000 - !.JPF !.JPX !.JP2 !.J2C !.J2K JPC
PCX - !.PCX
Photoshop PDF - !.PDF !.PDP
Photoshop RAW - !.RAW
Pict File - !. !.PCT !.PICT
Pixar - !.PXR
PNG - !.PNG
Scitex CT - !.SCT
Targa - !.TGA !.VDA !.ICB !.VST
TIFF - !.TIF !.TIFF

In fact, I just got done converting a bunch of !.BMP's to !.JPG's!. Just open the image and then "save as" a !.jpg!. Done!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Elements does support JPEG format!. That format has actually become the standard and most graphics programs can read JPEG files!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
