You will get a lot of very opinionated answers and most will have to do with how "lousy" or "untalented" or "unskilled" the artists were!. That won't help!.
Abstract- the word comes from Latin!. (hang in there)!. Abstractus- rough meaning to draw from!.
I've long held the opinion that anytime a 3 dimensional scene is reduced to a tow dimensional painting, the scene has been abstracted!.
This includes the Renaissance paintings right on up to where Picasso and a few others tried to use the two dimensional surface of a canvas to give you a complete view of the scene!. That meant they had to synthesize all the different views into one pictorial image!. This also meant that art had finally embraced what artists forever knew; that the making of art was as much thought as it was manual labor!.
It is my guess and experience that where we become most alienated is where the art and artist becomes most internal and personal, or prophetic and opposed to our world view!.
We feel left out, angry and insulted so our first defense is to call names and insults back and walk away!.
What we call "Abstract Art" as a movement or "ism" is very young and it's still being worked out!. the "new" is always threatening but it is my guess that it will take its rightful place in the progress of art history!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
