No!.!.!.It is not necessary!. Make a duplicate copy of the image and save it as a TIF file and use that file to experiment with!.
Since you have the image already in RGB, just increase the red channel and reduce the green and blue channels to balance overall exposure before converting to gray scale!.

It would be a shame to discard all the stuff you have to work with before making your image B&W!.

p!.s!. Never shoot the picture in the camera's version of monochrome as you would be having lost all the flexibility to alter your image in Photoshop!.

I suggest reading "Secrets of the Digital Darkroom" by Peter Cope (Amphoto Books, ISBN 0-8174-5824-7) as a great introduction to all the help you can get with this project!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you have access to Photoshop, there's no need!.
Go to Image>Adjustments>Channel Mixer - select Output Channel RED then Source Channel RED to 100%!.
This gives just the effect you are looking for!.
To save repeating all the steps you can save it as an Action (look it up)Www@QuestionHome@Com

By converting to black and white AFTER you add the red filter, it defeats the purpose of adding the red filter in the first place!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
