Ansel Adams worked with Edward Weston and Minor White in the late 1930's and early 1940's to develop and perfect the Zone system!. Adams did a lot of work, but Weston was the technical master!. Adams however was the better communicator and popularized it more effectively!.

The idea behind the zone system has been around as long as estimating exposure!.
Anyone who takes a light reading uses it - YOU decide what to take the reading from and how to apply it!.
As for who came up with formalizing it and giving it a name!.!.!.Ansel Adams is credited with spreading the idea, though I don't know who could claim authorship!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
