En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors!.

Working in natural light became particularly important in the mid 1800s, especially to what became known as the Barbizon school and later to the Impressionist painters!.

The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paints in tubes, a modern invention ( by an American artist ) which gave artists unheard of freedom!.

"Landscape" and "scenery" are generic terms that indicate the subject matter of a painting, while en plein air gives you an idea of the technique and the period of the work as well,

To sum up, en plein air indicates most definitely that the artist was present on the scene, and therefore that the work was not done from a picture!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
