Manfrotto and Gitzo make the best tripods!. Get one that is made out of carbon fiber!. They are very light and sturdy!.

Alluminum is not the way to go!. Although they are cheap and light, they are not very sturdy!. If you do choose to get one, make sure you stay close to it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I love my Manfrotto 055!.
It is solid and easy to adjust!.

I have teamed it with a Manfrotto 488 ball head and this combination works well with my DSLRs!.

Slick and Gitzo are two other well known names in tripods!.

I've been using the Slick U 8000!. Not very expensive and very reliable!. I've used it for some night shooting on the sloped shoulders of roads and in the streets of cities!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Bogen/Manfrotto is a good brand!.

As to the head, play with both ball point and pistol grip ones, and see which one YOU prefer!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
