Many agents offer the ability to specify so-called "rights restrictions!." Without knowing which agent you're with, I can only presume that this is what they mean!.

If you sell the exclusive rights to a photo for a specific usage or country, you then need to specify restrictions for the photo to ensure that it is not subsequently sold to somebody else for the same purpose, thus breaching the previous sale agreement!.

For instance, you might sell a photo of a woman cleaning her teeth to Crest toothpaste!. They don't want Macleans to use the same photo in another ad in the US, so when they buy the photo they might pay a huge premium so that the photo cannot be used in the US for 3 years!. You'd then have to specify "exclusions" for that photo of "US till Sep 2011," with every agent with which it is listed!.

If you put exclusions then you are limiting the markets where you can sell your photographs to!.

If you have pictures of recognisable people then the library will probably limit them to editorial use only unless you have model releases for anyone recognisable!. This avoids them being used to advertise products and anyone in the picture getting upset about it!.

I wouldn't sell online!. Try and find a cafe to sell ur photos in a cafe!. That is what I do!. I make a fair amount of money for my work!.
