Tips that might help:

1- start out by designing the clothes on a sketch pad this is crucial because if you just start to throw fabric together, who knows what you can end up with and it gives you a better feel for the color scheme you want to use

2- if you have to make it, look for patterns that have parts that are similar to your design it will make sewing it a lot easier
