Question: Why is it that the vast majority of people find modern art crap!?
This genre of art such as; A PILE OF FAG ENDS; A PILE OF BRICKS; ANIMALS CUT IN HALF ON DISPLAY; and many other crap examples!. How does it become worth large sums of money when no one actually likes it!. I know someone buys it but who controls the means of promoting crap into a "viable" product!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it is a wonderful display of the power of such art that it would make you have such an angry rant!. Why does it bother you so much!?

There is also a common theme being expressed in the answers here-that there is somehow some sort of conspiracy with this art, that the public are somehow being cheated!. And I don't believe that!.

Its fine to dislike something and to express that dislike, but simply to say something is 'crap' isn't articulate or worthwhile!. If something is just 'crap' you could just ignore it, surely!? No one is forcing you to go to art galleries!.

The fact is, the art you dislike has had enough of an effect on you to make you post this question!. And in my view, that is a successful piece of art, that stirred you and made you feel something, even if it is anger and resentment!.

Anyway, I'll let you choose an answer that agrees with your views now, which is what you want!.

Art no longer has to be pretty!. Its only requirement is that it makes you think or feel!. I may not like a piece, but maybe I'm not supposed to!. Maybe the cigarette butts are supposed to disgust you!. Maybe its a commentary on the great disappearance of ash-trays that follows a smoking ban!. I know I always use an ash tray when one is provided, but removing the ash tray isn't going to keep me from smoking, it will just turn me into an unwilling litter-bug!. That point of view makes it a little more interesting, don't you think!?

Here's a question: If the artist had painted the fag ends, is it more art-like than a sculpture made of butts!?

The main phrase here is "avant garde!." It is the aspect that makes an artist famous!. But the real test is the test of time!. Will it command those kind of prices in the future!? Probably not!. The promoters will long be dead!.

Just like any other commodity, marketing is everything!. If someone promotes it, then the weak-minded follow!. Collecting art is like collecting anything else!. You should buy it because you like it!. Market values always fluctuate!. There is no guarantee on the monetary value of the investment, so if its price bottoms out, you'd better like it or you will end up hating it!. Gallery owners control promotion, for the most part!. They are out to make money!. It is in their best interests to preserve the art snobbery that keeps people buying!. Customers don't want to admit that they don't like it, they want others to think that they understand!.

Very interesting topic!. I guess I kind of rambled on!.

PS - I stole Elliot Ness's hat! (Maniacal laughter)Www@QuestionHome@Com

It`s all about snobery, they promote this rubbish and pretend to see things in this art that we can`t see to make you think that they are more cultured than you are!.But they need putting away really because they are easilly lead people!.
I watched a programme once by Noel Edmonds he got a bunch of kids to make pictures in a scrap yard, he then got these top art critics and told them it was by a certain famous artist!. They fell over themselves to say how wonderful these pictures were, when he told them they were by a bunch of kids they vanished rather quickly, sums them up really doesn`t itWww@QuestionHome@Com

People think art should look real, like a photo or something, or else the artist doesn't have the skill to be an artist!. Abstract art usually doesn't conform to one's reality because it's the artist's reality you're looking at, which appears very strange!. I think using ordinary objects gets you to see the common things of the world in a different way, perhaps less repulsively and more like just objects that you don't react to and so you can see them more clearly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Personally, I think the reason some people find modern art 'crap' is that it's hard to appreciate, and they don't understand it!. Historically, art was often used to tell a story to those who were viewing it (especially religious art)!. Now it's not always used to get a message across (eg: for propagandistic purposes)!. I love traditional art, but think that some modern pieces are fantastic (and fun to look at)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Art is subjective!. As are most of the arts!. Our society is run on power!. And some might easily argue, these days, celebrity!. When you get into the big cities, it become who you know, and who they know!. It's endless, and changes with the seasons!. Perseverance in the arts period is essential!. It will become your turn one day because everyone else will either get married or die!. These are harsh Realities of the 'business' of art!. The craft itself is still protected and practiced in enclaves across the world!. But it's become elitist in our times, and that's ironic as it's the art of the people!. Showing ourselves to ourselves so we can learn something about how we tick and hopefully improve things, not maintain the status quo at all costs!. Just an opinion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

People with a lot of money and no common sense buy things that they don't need!. When they buy everything they can think of they begin to buy things that no one would think of!. I could sell a regular tv remote and a cordless house phone, cross them together and sell it as art!. Some idiot with a lot of money and nothing to do would buy it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The move towards the Hurst, Emin style sickens me,,they expand the boundaries of art without expanding the ability of the artist,,their work is pathetic, lacks skill and has no place, people copy their work and call themselves artists,,they`re not,,that kind of attempt should have stopped aged 5,
I paint,,have worked as a resident artist in galleries and sold over 90 pieces into 12 countries,,I now concentrate on military fine art,but can`t command the over inflated prices these morons get, morons I call them due to their inflated self opinions and lack of artistic/draughtsmanship,
The Tate Modern is a large building full of crapWww@QuestionHome@Com

Modern art is valued because of who produces it, rather than because of any inherent quality!.

I could take a dump on a bed and call it a "postmodern take on society's self indugence" and I would be sectioned!. Tracy Emin could do the same and someone would pay her 100 grand for it!.

It's about cliques and being part of the In Crowd!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Because it is crap!. A lot of modern art is conceptual and has to have little labels to explain the point of it!. The point always being to stir up thought, challenge our perceptions etc!. It is not to visually please us!. That is why the vast majority of us reject this nonsense!. I don't need a pickled cow to make me think about mortality, I just don't care, I know I'll die in the end!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

imagine you are on a trip and one singe photo is taken of the group you are with which nobody likes, then some years later a descendant looks at this photo and is pleased to see your likeness ,has the photo retained the same value through-out or is it more valuable as time has passed!?
also is it replaceable with similar but non-original copy would a copy be as valuabe
the answer l think lies in perceptionWww@QuestionHome@Com

Oh! how I agree with you!.You get some twisted mind who thinks that what he/she regards as "ART" should be foisted on the public who are told it is a masterpiece and as in the tale of the emperors new clothes are afraid to disbelieve what they are told for fear of looking foolish!.Well ,at the risk of looking foolish,I think it is a load of old tosh!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You're right! My dear old Grandad was once gulled into buying a right load of old rubbish by a so called art dealer when he was on his hols in Paris mind you that was a while ago now!.
Painter fella went by the name of Picasso, a right lot of old rubbish it were, couldn'd even paint eyes in the right place and put the sitters nose on her shoulder!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yeah, caught that!. Honestly I don't know, but getting further into art I can see why something which seems commonplace or ordinary can actually be quite technically grueling to create!. It makes me wonder if things I still find!.!.!.eccentric aren't like that!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

They who think that modern art is rubbish are those who just don't understand anything about art! If they can recognise it then that's ok!.!.!.

Conceptual art!.!.!. abstract art!.!.!.!. post modern!.!.!.!.!. There are people who don't have a clue about these things!.!.!.!.!.
