Question: Why are the high quality images I "place" in Adobe InDesign reduced to such poor quality!?

I am new to InDesign, so please forgive, but when I place a JPEG or GIF in InDesign, the quality is reduced significantly!. Any ideas!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

InDesign doesn't effect the quality of linked images at all when you print or output to PDF!. If you are referring to how the images appear in your layout while in InDesign, it is because what you're seeing on screen is a low-resolution preview!. This is ideal because the application works faster when it doesn't have to display the full resolution of the image!.

If you want to see a high-resolution preview!. Click on the image, then in the menu bar go to Object>Display Performance>High Resolution!. If you want to do this for the entire layout (not recommended since it can slow InDesign down significantly) you'll find the same option under the View menu!. Either way you're only affecting the appearance of the image, your original linked image is unchanged!.

Keep in mind that this will only have an effect on high-resolution images!. If you're working with images that are already 96dpi or lower, or if you've enlarged the images in InDesign below that threshold there is nothing in InDesign you can do to improve the appearance or printing of your images!.

BTW, !.gif files are not intended for printing, and will probably always output poorly from InDesign!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
