What is going on here!. I've never seen a question get attacked so badly!. You, as you know, are completely in the right and are correct in thinking that there are royalty free images out there for you to use!. There are even FREE royalty free images available!. stock!.xchng is a great site!. Here is the link to their usage information where they CLEARLY state you can use the images in books!!! You may have to contact some photographers for permission and I didn't read all the way through, but I would assume they would like credit - which you said you were planning on giving!. Good luck with your book!.

For all images the copyright belongs to the photographer unless they have tranfered it to another!. This is true even if there is no copyright mark or watermark!. Coyright symbols and watermarks as well as EXIF data are used to protect pictures but are not required by the US copyright office for copyright protection to be in effect!. You have to obtain permission from the photographer!. Just because they are posted on the internet does not mean you can copy and use them!. You still have to have the permission of the person owning the copyright, usually the photographer!. The US copyright office puts it this way "As a general matter, copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner" Crediting the photographer does not mean there is no infringement you must have permission!. It goes on to say "The copyright owner is entitled to recover the actual damages suffered by him or her as a result of the infringement, and any profits of the infringer that are attributable to the infringement and are not taken into account in computing the actual damages!. In establishing the infringer's profits, the copyright owner is required to present proof only of the infringer's gross revenue, and the infringer is required to prove his or her deductible expenses and the elements of profit attributable to factors other than the copyrighted work the copyright owner may elect, at any time before final judgment is rendered, to recover, instead of actual damages and profits, an award of statutory damages for all infringements involved in the action, with respect to any one work, for which any one infringer is liable individually, or for which any two or more infringers are liable jointly and severally, in a sum of not less than $750 or more than $30,000 as the court considers just!. For the purposes of this subsection, all the parts of a compilation or derivative work constitute one work!. In a case where the copyright owner sustains the burden of proving, and the court finds, that infringement was committed willfully, the court in its discretion may increase the award of statutory damages to a sum of not more than $150,000!. In a case where the infringer sustains the burden of proving, and the court finds, that such infringer was not aware and had no reason to believe that his or her acts constituted an infringement of copyright, the court in its discretion may reduce the award of statutory damages to a sum of not less than $200"

You can look for sites with royalty free images that give permission to use them at no cost!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think Sam made a good point!. Talk to a friend who is interested in photography and see if they will let you use their pictures in your book!. That way, you can help each other!. Trust me, most people who are into photography would love a chance to have their pictures published!.

Or visit online Photography forums like Photo!.net, or go to Photography clubs and ask if anyone would be willing to let you use their pictures!. They'll probably do it for free just to get a chance to have their pictures published, or maybe a very small percentage of your profits from the book!. But the fact is that the photographer never gives up copyright protection, they are simply giving you permission to use their pictures!.

That's the only LEGAL way to do it!. A picture is protected by copyright law the moment they take it!. Even if they don't put a copyright notice, it's still protected by law!. It's the same thing for your poems!. The moment you write something and actually put it into a physical form, it's protected by copyright law!. The only time where something is not protected by copyright is if the author or photographer specifically declares that they want their work in the "public domain!." Only pictures in the public domain can be used without permission!.

Most pictures on Wikipedia are in the public domain, so you can try searching there!. Otherwise, try talking to photographers and people who are interested in photography as a hobby and see if they will let you use their pictures!. You can't just copy and paste a random picture from the internet and use it without permission!.

What you are describing are "stock" images!. Some websites MIGHT have stock images and clipart that you can use for free without permission!. Just search on google for "free stock images, clipart" etc!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you can't take your own photos, perhaps you have a friend who is dying to get published and would be willing to provide some images for free!. As you might have gathered from the answers above me, you are not likely to find some outside source for free images if they will be used in a book where "someone" (you) will be making money!.

Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well you could try a stock photo site where you by the rights to use a picture for only a few dollars, could maybe your friend take the pictures for you, or could you set up a deal with a amateur photographer who is just starting out!?!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

just take your own, but im not sure if this will work but you can get pictures of like photo bucket and edit them with a program and use it, then atleast you can say you were responsible for something in the pic!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

By taking your own pictures!.

P!.S!. If you are making profit off your poetry and still using pictures you're making profit off the pictures as well!. Unless you plan on getting permission from those photographers you are stealing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ok you give me the rights to your poems and i will give you a free image!.

As you dont value others work, yours must have very little value!.

Why is it okay for you to profit off the images, but not the photographer!? You're very selfish, you know! Why should any photographers want to help you!?

You would also be making a profit from their images--and they wouldn't!. So get it published without any images and you will see the profit from your poetry alone!. Then you will see how much value those photographs add!. Photographers are running a business, not a charity!. They need to put food on the table, same as everyone!. Why do you want to steal from them!?

Hey I have a question for you! How would you like it if I steal someone's poetry off the web--maybe yours--and publish them in a book with my photos, then take all the profits for myself! I'll bet you wouldn't like that, would you!?

How about this nice poem I just found!.!.!.somewhere!.!.!.

Born in the decade
where the truth was said!.
Freestyle, rap, and hip hop
was on every block!.

You guys like it!? I found lots more where that came from! Think I could put it in a book and make some money!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I build lots of websites/blogs, I've came up with this problem when I first started also!. The best way that I've found is to just "Google" the images!. If a photo is copywritten just don't use it!. I've found there are lots of photographers that are out there posting pictures online that are very pleased when you use there photos!. Of course if there is a watermark or signature on the picture you should leave it there so the photographer gets full credit!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

go to HOME on your internet and go to IMAGES then type in whatever u want and you will find pics of it

hope this helps : )Www@QuestionHome@Com
