Well I'll tell you,
The most often used ink was made from "Lampblack"!.!.!.it was the remnants of an oil lamp and the flame and smoke from the kerosene which was scraped off and collected and often mixed with Vinegar, the vinegar acted as a kind of Medium between the coloring and the water and vinegar,!.!.!.!.!.the vinegar makes the more acidic and when mixed with water and the colorant is added (Lamp black) it thickens the water and it can then be stored without refrigeration!. The other colors back then were "Scarlet" and "Sepia"!.!.!.!.the scarlet was often made from various beatles and was considered "Very Fancy"!.!.!.!.!.!.Sepia is made from walnut husks,!.!.!.!.!.it's kinda simple but you have to be ready to wear the color on your hands cuz it takes some time for it to wear off!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Sepia was at the time "Common", it had three basic colors that could be made from one recipe,!.!.!.Those were Brownish Purple, Dark Brown and light brown!.!.!.!.!.!.Yellows and greens were made from vegetable dyes made from grasses and small shrubs!.!.!.!.!.!.!.These colors fade rather quickly in the presence of light and so you have to add certain chemicals to the dyes,!.!.!.!.those were boiled down and the remaining fluid was the dye or ink!. Deep black could be made from soote from any metal surface which came in contact from a flame,!.!.!.!.this is called "Lampblack" as well but true LampBlack comes from glass and soote!.!.Lamp black is a very cold looking black!.!.!.!.!.Then there is "Ivory Black" which was originally made from burning bones from animals and birds,!.!.!.the remaining chared black bones were ground up into a powder which once again was mixed with Vinegar or some other acidic medium!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Lamp Black is a warm black, very deep and rich,!.!.!.the shades range from Yellowish green to a kind of pinkish black!. In the middle 1800s, the unied states goverment began producing fancy chemicals and rendered a deep red dye called "Ganado Red"!.!.!.!.on the eastern seaboard people made a deep blue color from Mustard plants,!.!.!.this ink or dye is known as "Indigo Blue"!.!.!.another Blue was made from aged blackberry juice, it is deep purple but over time it fades and the red goes away from the purple and your'e left with a soft blue color!.!.!.!.!.!.!.I'm certain there are other colors that were made back then but none of them was "colorfast" and most dyes faded over time!.!.!.!.!.I hope this helps you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
