I use Winsor & Newton gouache, and like it a lot!.

If you can't find it at a really good price per tube, and the sets are too expensive, consider using a limited pallette to start with--Primary Red, Primary Yellow, Primary Blue, Ivory Black, and White (get the small tube of black, but a big tube of white)!. You can use those to mix all the colors you can't afford to buy!. In fact, limiting the number of colors you have can really help you learn about mixing color!.

Then, as you can afford it--and if you need them--add a green (like Winsor Emerald), Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Medium, etc!.

Oh, and if you already have watercolors on hand, you can use them with gouache; the colors just won't be opaque!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You probably won't be able to find a good gouache set at a craft store, you need to go to an art supply store like Blick or Utrecht!. As far as a good price goes, try going now, (labor day weekend) there should be sales at all the art stores!.

also, the art stores will have a wider range of supplies, so they should have cheaper and more expensive ones!.

As far as a good brand is concerned, my instructor required winsor and newton!. I am not a huge gouache fan (it's not very forgiving) so I can't recommend anything else!.

stay away from the acryli-gouache!. it sounds great, but ended up being horrible!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

If there is a hobby lobby in your area I have seen a set there that brings about 15 different colors for about 23 dollars!.

If you go to their website every other week they have a 40% off coupon, which will bring the price down quite a bit!.

Hope that helps!.
