Question: Can I use pencils to draft my artwork on a canvas!?
I am referring to a traditional art canvas, my question is pretty direct,
can I use pencils to draw the outlines of my artwork without it affecting the final outcome of the paint!? (acrylic)

I'm a newbie painter, and I'm really afraid to touch my canvas before I know it's safe!. It's my first time trying it out :)

thanks to those who will find time to answer :3Www@QuestionHome@Com

You most certainly can!.
My father was a painter!. He used to do paintings based on pictures of the family or vacation pictures from Europe or stuff he saw in National Geographic!. He would make slides and project them onto the canvas, then outline with pencil or a sharp charcoal stick!. The pencil is completely covered by the paint!.

The recommendation to use soft pencil is also a good point!. A hard pencil could scratch your outline into the canvas and then the dents might be visible!. With oil paint I don't think it's an issue, but acrylic paint might be thinner and might not fill in the scratches!.

I don't mind smearing the pencil into the painting, I personally like the effect!. A word of advice though - Do NOT pencil onto the white canvas!. Paint it a colour - any colour first!. White is not a neutral color, and you don't want to have to be fighting the canvas the entire time!. Besides, the texture of canvas does a horrible job on pencil tips - you'll go through dozens of them because they'll be worn down so fast!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi Enzo, yes you can, but make sure you spray the canvas with a workable fixative before you paint!. Otherwise, you will smear the pencil into the painting!. Workable fixative is available at any art store, not expensive!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, you can use a pencil, but make sure it is a soft one! Charcoal is another widely used medium to do outlines on canvas!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yup!.
Cause you're suppose to outline what you're going to paint w/ a pencil first, but lightly, hah don't want to make a really dark mark!.
have fun painting! :)Www@QuestionHome@Com
