I think the 2nd image is better as the lighting and composition are very nice!. the 1st has tons of character, but the lighting on the head is not even and so if you use that one, photo shop the shadow area some to even it out, and add a bit of contrast/punch to the image!.

If I were entering a contest dealing with animals, I would do some research!. First you need to know what the judges are looking for beyond the 50/50 plan (typical by the way)!. What kinds of composition and lighting do they tend to award points!?

Then with that knowledge, spend as much time as you can at animal theme parks and zoos, shooting for the next contest !.!.!. while your images are interesting and you have controlled the exposure on both images, there are things you could do with lighting and composition that could make a good shot spectacular and my guess these judges are looking for spectacular!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
