It saves not only time but the threads on the camera from damage too!. It allows you to take camera off of the tripod and put it in your camera bag quickly!. also, extra mounting plates can be purchased so you can quickly mount more than one camera!. - - geared center column allowing more precise movement -- 360 degree panoramic guide for stitching photos together seamlessly There are lots of good choices on the market!. My current favorite is the Slik U-212DX!. Www@QuestionHome@Com Stay with known brands like Manfrotto, Velbon, Benbo, Slik, Gittos, Gitzo!. Don't waste money on some no-name department store one!. Choose a head (often sold separately) that suits your needs!. For landscape and scenics a 3-way tilt/pan head might be best!. For sports/action a ball head might be best!. Buy a model with a Quick Release plate and buy an extra one!. Make sure the tripod "fits" you!. If you're 6' tall and it only opens to 4' 6" you'll quickly tire of bending over to use it!. Actually, if the tripod extends to your height or more that means you won't have to fully extend the legs and it will be more stable!. If anyone suggests raising the center column ignore them!. A 5 pound weight (camera and lens) atop a slender column is unstable!. A slight breeze can cause camera shake, as can just moving the camera!.
