That depends on the artist and the painting!. I spend any where from 40 to 60 hours over a two to three week period!. I have to add that before i start a painting it is pretty much planned out making written as well as mental notes on how the painting will develope!. Since i do have a regular job and my painting space is limited, this time period is more out of necessity!. To get a painting done in a short amount of time as possible and yet still produce a quality painting!. I taught myself to paint with oils using library books and learned about many artist and their techniques employing only those that i felt helped me in achieving my goal!. When I first started painting commissioned work i painted wet on wet, with the idea of getting it done quickly and getting paid!. I am now starting to take more time but also adjusted my asking price and this will keep changing!.So there really is no certain amount of time an artist should spend on a painting, but keep in mind you need to know how long it actually takes because someday if you haven't already, take on a job for someone and they will need to know when they can expect their painting to be done!. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio!.com under artist name GUERRO1!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some artists pain alla prima, meaning all in one sitting or while the paint is wet!. Some spend months, even years, completing a painting!. It totally depends on the artist, the style, the subject, the size, the medium, and how much time you want to spend in it!. I have done pastels in 2 hours that took awards in shows, and colored pencil pieces that took over 100 hours that never got noticed!.

If you have a painting that you are working on, paint on it every day, or at least every week!. !. !. !. or you may never complete it! Www@QuestionHome@Com

when i was a kid, one of my friend's mother was an artist, she would sometimes spend months on a painting!. my lovely and talented wife will spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a month on a piece!. i spend anywhere from a few hours to several days maybe a couple of weeks!.
there really is no rush i just loose interest with a piece if i don't finish it in fairly good order!.
it is really up to the artist's personal disposition i think and the kind of painting they are doing: stan's crop art involves a growing season and can only be viewed from an airplane but what incredible paintings they are!. and his brush is a tractor and plow
one of our friends in australia knocks out a work in a few days and they are awesome works of surreal art Www@QuestionHome@Com
