Moonlight snow covered mountain peaks, a small mountain lake!. Maybe an aurora borealis!.

In fact Bob Ross has a painting similar to what I've described!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

possibly a combination of night scene with wolves and forest and/or a lake stream either in winter with more white adding to cover, or spring with sound lake reflections, like bob ross technique, you could add medium layer before painting and blend colors with ease and flexibility, have rough idea of layout before applying paints,

Maybe the use of bright or neon colors would be a good idea!.
Since it's a black canvas, the colors would pop out to the viewer

maybe something along the lines of this:

Animals!.!.!.dogs like you said or cats!. You could make their eyes reflective like they are with greens!. You could even get metallic paint like gold and silver!. They could be black dogs and cats with reflective eyes!.!.!.!.and a dark sky with stars!. That would be super cool!Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think you should do something related to night, like shadows and angles, using almost colors, like grey and silver!. =]Www@QuestionHome@Com

An 18" x 24" canvas really isn't all that large!. in fact, by today's standards of modern art is kinda small!.

If you intend to paint over the black canvas and intend to do realism or figurative work you'll face a lot of problems trying to set your perspective just right, trying to sketch out any lines or images, etc!. simply because it is a black canvas!. You can't see your own pencil sketches on the black canvas!.

You might be better off simply repainting the whole canvas white again and treating it like a normal white canvas!.

If you still want to work on a black canvas then I'll give you a few tips;

Many of my modern paintings I do on a black gessoed canvas because I like the effects of the other colors over black!. Some of my art is figurative and surreal and I've learned to use soft leaded blue drawing pencils to sketch out any outlines, set up my perspectives and define my details!.

Here are some samples of what you can do painting over a black canvas:

None of my paintings look even remotely like Bob Ross work!.

However, again, you will probably be better off trying to painjt on your canvas by repainting it white first than trying to get a Bob Ross type painting over the black field!.
