Depends a lot on the dog!. Black and white of a black and white dog may not do much for ya!.

As many have mentioned, get down on their level, which may inspire them to come running over, so working on "Stay!" might be the first thing to concentrate on!.

If whistling makes them turn their head to the side, do that as it gives them a lot more expression!.

If they're fetchers, throw whatever they'll retrieve and get a shot going and coming back!. If you're lucky you'll get a mid air, all legs going kinda look!.

If you have someone who can help you, having them just out of the shot with a treat in hand may get their undivided attention!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The dog might be afraid of the camera, the flash, the noise!. Let the dog get to know the camera!. Let him sniff it!.
Photo him doing what he likes, playing, sleeping!. Try close ups, Get pics of his paws, ears!. Get down to the dogs level to take the pic!.
It is hard to get good pics of your dog - but worth it !Www@QuestionHome@Com

i usually give my dog a dog treat!. while he is chowing down on that i start framing the shot and focusing and as soon as he is finished with it he looks right at the camera because he wants another one :) works every time!. treats are the only way i can get him to stay in one spot, because as soon as i get on the ground with him he wants to climb all over me!. so try distracting your dog with a treat as i mentioned above!. As already mentioned, get down on their level, focus on the eyes, just like you do with people portraits!. Catch them playing, running, a unusual expression!. Some pet portraits do real good in Black & white!. also pets and kids go great together in a photo!. Use a high shutter speed, they move fast! Try to find some interesting scenery for background!. also if
it is safe and not illegal and there is no fear of the animal running away, remove the collar and leash, that adds to the dignity of the animal!. But only do that if it is feasible!. Head shots are great with the right dogs!.
