I'm am an artist and have painted several drum heads in my career, but I also spent most of my working life as a custom painter, motorcycles, vans, etc!. "Car paint" as you put it takes in several categories, Lacquers are too brittle and will crack and are also hard to find since they are not used much anymore!. Enamels are what you want because they stay flexible for a long time!. I don't recommend an enamel where you have to add a catalyst, or "hardener"!. This paint is the more advanced paint, but it's expensive, more brittle than what you would want, and you need to know how to use it correctly or you'll have real problems!. I suggest alkyd enamel (what cars were painted with in the '50's and '60's) You can get it at most hardware stores, Wal-mart, K-mart, etc!. Rustoleum is one of the trade names, but basically, just an air dry, oil based enamel such as porch paints, oil based house paints, etc!. If you use an airbrush, make sure you clear coat it after you're done with the same stuff, or it won't last!. Alkyd enamel will stay very flexible and will probably outlast your drums!. Hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it is best to go to a music shop and have it professionallyy done!. if you want to do it yourself, go to a car garage ( a roadside 1) AND BUY THE PAINT]
