The aperture determines how much light actually gets to the sensor!. The lower the number (f/stop) the more light hits the sensor!. And the less of the scene will be in focus!. The higher the number (f/16) less light gets to the sensor and more of the sun is in focus!. For portraits use a lower number to blur out the background and make the subj "pop", or if the background in a scene is distracting open up the aperture to blur it out!.
The higher numbers are great for landscapes when you want a lot of detail and everything in focus!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Aperture refers to the amount of light admitted through the lens by the diaphragm!. Higher numbers, e!.g!. f/22, indicate a smaller opening and, therefore less light coming in to the lens!. In order to compensate, the exposure must be made longer of the ISO raised!. Small numbers, e!.g!. f/2!.8, are correlated with a larger lens opening, which admits more light!. You can then speed up your exposure or lower the ISO!.

The numbers are confusing because larger numbers mean smaller aperture and smaller numbers mean larger aperture!.

Aperture is key to controlling the depth of field in your images!. A large lens opening will have a narrow depth of field!. In an extreme case, you might have focus on your subject's eyes, but the tip of the nose will be out of focus!. If you stop the lens down to a smaller opening, the depth of field is broadened!.
