Question: I want to start using ink as my main medium, help!?
hey i'm a sophomore in highschool and hope to someday fully illustrate my own graphic novel!. Think of JtHM if you don't know what i mean, that's the only one i've read that uses ink the way i intend to(Google it!)!. Anywayy i want to start using ink, pens, etc!., but i truly know nothing about good brands or where to get the right supplies or anything!. For the past couple years i've just been relying on thin sharpies and pencil, which can be quite messy!. Anyone want to help out a newbie!?
PS: i know nothing about anything!. Please don't assume i'll know what you're talking about!. ahaha!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would tend towards actual ink pens like the Rotring artpen with a sketching nib

I also use a straightforward cartridge pen and brush washes, for detailed scratchy work I like the feel of a mapping pen with a bottle of ink to dip from

But for large areas of black I will use a brush and ink, a number of different width and shape brushes will cover large areas quicker than any pen!. Inks do vary but Parker's Quink is a good starting point!. Rotring ink will give a really deep black!. You can make your own, there are various recipes

If you use scraper board and remove ink with a scraper you can get exciting effects!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

i just sort of like to draw a lot, so I do not know how much I can help you!. Have you tried the new sharpie pens!? they are awesome!. also, if you go into michael's they have pens for artists!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

i like using the big packs of gel pens because the work good and there are a crap load of colorsWww@QuestionHome@Com

Sharpies are good for a budget especially if you have a low one!. Roller ball pens are pretty good and what I use when I can't get anything really worth while!. They are the kind with slightly smoother more glossy ink than ball point pens they use a gel like ink, some good brands, and the ones I use, are uniball and pilot!. A good pilot pen I use is called Precise V5, but you can buy different kinds Wal-mart!. I dislike of using "gelly roll pens" which are the more ghetto version of rollerpens because a lot of them run out of ink to quick and when they do they make uneven lines and are hard to control, they sort of make little "Hiccups" in your lines!. Then there are the more expensive kind called Sakura Pigma Micron pens, I just call them micron pens, you can get them a Michaels!. Those are really good for your fine lines and detailing!.

So Sharpies for a large area that you don't want to spend years and years using a fine detailing pen, or use some more expensive marker for that which I actually suggest over sharpies!. Though I am not sure what to recommend for good markers!.

Roller pens are what I use for my some what thicker to medium lines!.
They are pretty good and leave less differing areas (Like dark and light spots) compared to sharpies!.

Microns are by far my favorite kind of pen, they are good for fine lines and smooth inking they are very reliable but are kind of delicate!.

But alot is trial and error, find what works for you! I hope that helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com
