Position:Home>Visual Arts> Painting something that already's been painted??????Question: Painting something that already's been painted!?!?!?!?!?!? is it illegal or bad to paint a picture the same way some one else did but with like with ur name at the bottom!?!?!? cuz along time ago i saw this guy he was painting on pbs kids!. And then he drew like a lake and trees and stuff and i was painting that just like 5 mins ago!. and i put my name at the bottom!. can i like sell it after i painted it with my name at the bottom!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

You can use someone else's work as an inspiration or starting point, but add your own content!.Www@QuestionHome@Com It isn't illegal!. At the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, there are always artists who set up their easels and canvas there and paint replicas of the artwork!. Anyone is allowed to do that!. I don't know these replicas are sold, but I'm sure they are not!. I think that these artists copy the paintings for practice, rather than profit!. So, it's not illegal to copy artwork; copying only becomes illegal when you try to profit off of someone's work or try to credit yourself!.Www@QuestionHome@Com If you copy something exactly and then try to pass it off as your own work, its infringing on a lot of different levels and you could be looking at lawsuits and charges!. Depending on where you live and the laws there would reflect what most likely would happen!. Consider: Forgery Copyright intellectual property etc!. Instead why not paint something a little different and make it more unique!? Make your own brand stick out and be recognized for who you are instead of just imitation!. I hope that helps!.
