Question: Can a person get a job as a graphic designer if they have a BFA in drawing!?
I really want to major in drawing first, my state university has a great arts program!. I was thinking of doing both drawing and graphic design!. As long as my portfolio was great for the graphic design positions, would I be taken as seriously as someone with a graphic design degree!? Eventually I'd like to get my BFA in graphic design, but I want to major in drawing first!.

Or not!? Please be honest!. You won't hurt my feelings!. I just want a realistic perspective of what might happen once I graduate!. Thank you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Okay!. I worked in graphic design for many years (at several places)!. I think it's fine if you want to do drawing first, as you can incorporate both in a job!. You will actually be more valuable as an employee, because you can draw, as well as put together a flyer, page, etc!. I found that my artistic ability was greatly appreciated!.

I would suggest doing some research into graphic design, though, at the same time as you are in school (learning to draw)!. Learning to do graphics on the computer is very important, and your ability in drawing will help there, too!. I did computer graphics, and illustration, and being versatile counts!. You could even look for a summer or part-time job which would train you!. It could lead to a full-time job later!. Employers like to hire those they know!. It is easier for them, and you would already be partially trained!.

I would put together some layouts, with and without your illustrative work, so the prospective company can see what you can do!

Hope this helps!Www@QuestionHome@Com
