Art nouveau was a decorative style originating in the 1880s, reached peak of popularity around 1900!. Called many names (German Jugenstil)!. It was characterized b y swaying, curving lines, flower and leaf motifs and woman when depicted were shown partially or wholly nude, often with long flowing hair!. I am not sure whether your two sculptures can be considered to be in this style, but they are definitely not Art deco pieces!. This was the fashionable style between World War 1 and 1 (1919-1939) which replaced Art Nouveau and unlike Art Noveau had little regard for refined craftmanship!. It featured streamlined, geometric patterns and strong color schemes!. No sinuous figures as were found in Art nouveau!. In my opinion neither of your two statuettes can be described as pure Art Nouveau!. However It would be worth taking them into an antiques specialist to get an opinion!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I can answer your request of art nouveau!. I know little about art deco!.

Art Nouveau; (french for "new art")

Was an international decorative style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries!. The style is characterized by sinuous lines or contours, sometimes called "whiplash" lines to describe their serpentine curves and how they reverse themselves in unexpected ways!.

Art Nouveau appered in nearly all art forms, from furniture and housewares to posters, typography, jewelry, glass, painting, sculpture, and architecture!.

Artist who worked in this style were antihistorical!. They tried to free themselves from what they saw as superficial realism and the revivals of earlier historical styles!.

I hope this helps you in some ways!.

Art Nouveau happened before Art deco interms of chronology!.

Nouveau was centered around a love and reverence for all things organic and natural!. The characteristic features are all about sinewy curves and free flowing lines!. Paris is it's home and you will learn more by googling "School of Nancy" The metro stations in Paris are classic nouveau as is the work of Antonio Gaudi in Spain and Toulouse LeTrec in France!. Nouveau covered everything in design not just architecture and furniture!.

Art Deco was a direct offshoot of the bauhaus movement in Germany!. After WWI The bauhaus school came about as a home for industrial artisans they believed in the honesty of materials and in exploiting the new inventions of the industrial age!. They used a lot of chrome and steel etc!. LeCorbusier and Eileen Grey were two of it's well known artists!. Grey's tubular steel cocktail tables are still being made today as is much of Lecorbusier's work and are at home in the deco world!. Anyway, when the political climate in Germany went south the Bauhaus artisans got flung to all four corners of the earth but a lot came to America!. Through the the natural progression of time these artist's palletes grew into Deco which takes it's form from the Bauhaus and regency movements!. Classic traits of deco are clean lines, animal prints, geometric patters, chrome, steel, leather etc!. Radio City Music Hall, The Chrysler Building and the Empire state are all classic examples of deco!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
