Question: Do I have to learn how to draw to be a game designer!?

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what game design is!. There is no art in game design!. There is no programming!. There is minimal testing!. Game design is done almost exclusively with writing and math!. Game programmers program the games, game artists make the art, and game testers test the games!. It's the designer's job to come up with the ideas for every tiny detail of the game, and communicate those ideas to the programmers, artists, testers, etc!. The designer decides what NPC the player encounters where, and what the NPC will say; what weapon the player can get at what point in the game and how much damage it does; what attacks a boss mob has and how much damage they do, etc!.

So, no, you only need to know how to draw if you want to become a game artist!. If it's the details of gameplay that interest you, being able to draw is not a requirement!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!. There is no way around it!. To be any kind of designer you must know the foundation principals of drawing!. That doesn't mean that you must draw like Michelangelo or da Vinci, but you do need to know how to draw!. It's fundamental!. There's no faking it!.

There are things like perspective, volume, depth, light, shadow, value, hue, color theory, composition, line weight, foregrounds, backgrounds, foreshortening, etc, that cannot be faked!. You must learn and understand these things in order to design effectively!. There is no shortcut!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Like other people have said, it really is almost invaluable to learn all these things about drawing, like perspective, color theory, and all that jazz!.

To be good at game design, you need to have good ideas!. Drawing, helps you convey those ideas!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
