Question: Is, Edouard Manet's "Le Bar aux Folies-Bergere" an impressionist, or realist piece of art!?
What is it - Impressionist, or Realist!?

I read somewhere that the girl in the painting is obviously impressionist, but generally, what would the piece be classified as!? I'm asking because it's hard to say as Manet was both active in the impressionist and realist movements!.

Thanks!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, it is an impressionist painting!. Manet was inspired by an actual sight - the sight of woman behind the bar and he has striven to capture the mood and atmosphere of the place - a characteristic of Impressionist painting; he has also played around with the objects he sees - the mirrors, what can be seen in the mirrors etc!. If this were a realistic painting he would have studied the subject most carefully and recorded exactly what he saw!. Read a description of the painting to learn about all the changes and games he was playing!. In this text the writer states that the work is very typical of an impressionist artist!.
