Question: Basic oil painting tips for complete beginner!?
I do alot of painting with acrylic paints, but recently got given some nice oil paints as a gift!. I would love to try my hand at oil painting but I'm very confused about it all!. I have done lots of research but it just confuses me more!.

Basically, I would like to know what I need to get started, that is mediums, thinners, etc!. There are so many and I would like to know exactly what I should buy, whether I should mix my own, ready-made mediums or alkyd!.

I would greatly appreciate your help!!! ThanksWww@QuestionHome@Com

You need to go buy some linseed oil and some turpentine!. some soft brushes they all specify wheather or not they are for oil acrylic and water!. The paper can be as simple as matt board or high cost high quality oil paper!. you need a wooden pallet for oils the oil sinks into the wood and is the right amount!. To paint with oils you need to be outside or in a well ventalated area!. and you combine a little bit of the pigment from a tube with some of the linseed oil!. if you want a thinner clearer coverage you can use the thinner but only sparingly!. The thinner is mostly used for cleaning off the brush!. once your done with your painting then you should let it dry for a day or two!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Once you get set up with a palette, paints, and a canvas and brushes plus listen to everyones advice on what to do and what not to do, then get to work!. Start off by painting with a brush and only one color like brown or black just to get a feel for how this thing called painting with a brush works!. Then maybe add white or a lighter color, yellow and white work well if your using a brown like burnt umber, this way you can see how to blend your colors and the way to mix stuff on your palette before you get to work!. Enjoy, it could be the start of something big!Www@QuestionHome@Com

As you know acrylics dry fast!. !. !. but oils can be worked wet for along time!. You can add drying agents to oils to speed the drying time!.

One thing I see beginners doing too often is mixing muddy colors!. I paint in acrylics (oils when I was very young) and if I ever return to oils I will practice mixing colors for a long time before painting an actual finished picture!.

Once you are painting !. !. !. pre-stretched canvas is a good investment!.

And, yes, go for odorless spirits and I know one professional portrait painter who only uses linseed with her oils!. While you can use the same kind of brushes, I would not use your acrylic brushes with oil or vice-versa!. Actually, oil brushes are made to withstand the solvents and acrylics are made to be cleaned in water !. !. !. they use different metal for the ferrules (the tip that holds the bristles on the brush)!.

And be careful your cat or dog does not get into your paints! That can spell disaster!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Very simple if you paint with acrylics!. You can use the same brushes but you need a solvent "turpinoid" or other odorless solvent, and a medium, linseed, stand oil, or "liquin"!. Those are used in place of the water in acrylics!. Oil painting needs to be done in a well ventilated place, not on your kitchen table and be prepared for odor and long drying times!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When i decided to learn how to paint with oils almost six years ago i did it with library books!. I found that no one book covers everything so i went through a whole lot of books my first six months just to get a basic understanding!. You may want to get some canvas boards, oil painting brushes, low odor thinner to clean or thin your paint, and some linseed oil!. You may also want to buy a good color wheel to help you with mixing colors!. My art can be checked out at hellosanantonio!.com under artist name GUERRO1!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

get the shop bought stuff first then once you think you are good enough for the real deal, go out and buy your own stuff!. if i was you i wouldnt use oils as they smell and dont come out of your clothes so like me stick to the acrylis :PWww@QuestionHome@Com
