It tends to vary from person to person!. I tend to switch between the two depending how my muse is treating me!. For complicated perspectives on the human body (ex drawing a form from a perspective at the feet looking at the head) I tend to use guide lines!.
Many people I know who depend heavily on guide lines draw from direct instruction of an art book or some other learning tool!. They need to see the guides in order to picture how the human form would look in a certain position!.
Other people with natural talent take inspiration from the world around them and learn to draw the human form as they see it not as it is posed!. They picture the actual form in their head as if it were alive and in front of them!.
Some people progress from guides to picturing the form in front of them as they get more advanced!. and some advanced people start off picturing the form in front of them and regress to using guides in order to perfect a more refined technique!.
It really varies and depends on the artist's personal style!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
