They are called laurals (pronounced lorels), they were originally used as ceremonial crowns by the Romans, which were awarded to people who had done something of note!.

There is a saying - 'Don't rest on your laurels', which refers to this!.

They are still used today - the wreath that racing drivers, motogp or sports people get is made from laural!.
It is also used as a military honour badge!.
