Adobe Photoshop is probably the one most used by professional photographers!. Most people however never use many of the features in the program!. so before you buy it ( its expensive) you may want to decide what you want to do!. Many community colleges or adult education programs and even some libraries around here offer digital darkroom/photoshop classes!. This would let you get your hands on them and try!. Lightroom is another adobe program that is better at some things than Photoshop and not as good at others!. A cost effective alternative may be Photoshop elements!. It has the most commonly used functions from photoshop and can be found on sale for around 70 US!. I also like Capture NX!. All of these programs can be expanded with plug in prigrams from people like onone software and Nik software to name just a couple!. I know most of the Nik software can be downloaded for a 10 day trial!. You may be able to that with adobe as wellWww@QuestionHome@Com

If you have a mac, iPhoto gives you the ability to touch up and do special effects; you can also add Aperture for more professional options; Photoshop is the application of choice for touch ups and manipulating images!. Another simple way is to use Hewlett Packard Director, it has photo editing tools that are simple and it costs nothing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Adobe Lightroom is the best system for making edits to any kind of file, but even better for RAW files, organizing and such!. Aperture, from experience, is a big pain in the butt, because Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom work together seamlessly!.

Lightroom is good for organizing and making general edits, and photoshop is for drastic manipulationWww@QuestionHome@Com

If you want to play around with HDR, get Photomatix!.

You can use the trial version, but it places a watermark (on larger images), but there's a workaround for that!.
