Who owns the Smiley Copyright?

Question: Who owns the Smiley Copyright!?

We all know about Smiley's right!? Well, I paint Smiley's and other logos eg!. the batman symbol, onto ceramic mugs and other stuff for the kids in my extended family!.

I would like to try selling these on ebay, but I'm not sure if I would be violating any sort of copyright by doing this!. I know I can't sell anything with the batman logo on it, but what about Smiley's!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

According to Wikipedia the smiley was never trademarked or whatever by the original inventor and it fel into public domain!.
