Question: Good digital camera for novice photographer who wants to travel!?
I own a Canon EOS 630 (film), my Dad's old camera, with a 300mm lens which i have practicing on for a few years and i am ready to move on to digital!. I am by no means going professional but i would like a great quality camera to take with me whilst i travel!. I am told a Nikon D80 might be the way to go but I would like the professionals' opinions from all of you!.

I apologize if this sounds like all the other questions!.!.!.Thanks in advance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi,
Here are some positives for Nikon D80:

1) 10!.2 megapixel!. A substantial upgrade from the 6mp of the older cameras, performance should be very comparable to the highly regarded D200 camera;

2) 11-point AF system!. Similar again to the D200 in performance (though not as easy to change);

3) Large viewfinder (!.94x magnification)!. Again, taken from the D200, this is a clear improvement over the previous cameras!. Spec wise, this is also better than all the competition, even though other, personal preference factors need to be taken into consideration (such as layout of LCDs and focusing points);

4) 2!.5" LCD!. Not only is it larger, it can also be viewed at a much wider angle--particularly handy when locked to a tripod!.

5) As to ergonomics, the D80 is terrific!

6) The weight of the camera is low, and its bulk, reasonable!.

7) The D80 has a high enough resolution to make good sized prints!.

8) Auto ISO and the ability to change ISO for any given shot!.

9) Compatible with the full range of 35mm lenses, speedlights and accessories!.

10) Nikon always includes a better than average 5 year warranty in the US on their lenses!.

The camera is small for Nikon (about like the D50), but has a good, firm grip for those with medium to larger hands!. Controls are well thought out--easy to get to and use!. Dampening of mirror noise is better than its competition!.

before i even finished reading, i suport nikon!. cannon is good, in fact most are great!. but you can go as far as a nikon!. lens make the camera!. nikon is # 1 in lensWww@QuestionHome@Com

That is a good camera!. You do want the big lens because photos alway come out better!. Capturing what your eye can see is not easy with a small point and shoot camera!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, one important question is: how much money do you have to spend!?

A DSLR would be very nice, but they're expensive and I'm not convinced that you actually *need* one!. Just one with decent optics, a good-sized CCD, can accept add-on lenses/filters, and has a good amount of optical zoom (or an add-on lens for that)!. Oh, and shutter lag is obnoxious!.

I'm no pro, but I love taking pictures!. Personally I have a Sony DSC-F717, and it meets my needs almost always (shutter lag is annoying when trying to photograph sports, but okay for most other things I want to do)!. That model is a few years old!. I paid $800 in 2003, and they are going for about $100-150 on eBay now!. There was a CCD recall that Sony is fixing free through September - if you get one, get one that has already had this problem fixed!.

Another thing to consider is where you'll be traveling to!. If you're going somewhere that's wet, sandy, or where you're likely to drop the camera or fall while carrying it, you might get something more rugged!. I just bought a SeaLife SL-320 to use while scuba diving, and I'll also take it skiing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
