No!. The acrylic would have to be painted on first!. Try to remember that oils are just that, oil!. Painting acrylic (which is water based) on oil will only cause it to peel later or worse!. I always do my under painting with acrylic paint and then do the oil!. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio!.com under artist name GUERRO1!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That really wouldn't work at all!. Strictly speaking, oil paints and acrylic paints should be kept separated in a painting as best as you can!. Oil paintings (especially if the paint is in the pricier range of the spectrum) dries incredibly slow!. (From days to weeks to even years depending on the brand of paint!.) Put it this way, if you leave a pan of oil out in the sun for days, in the end, there will still be a greasy residue that you just won't be able to get rid of no matter how long you let it dry!. Acrylics on the other hand is very much like a plastic!. It'll peel if it's not taken care of very well!.

(There are some instances where you actually can use a tiny bit of oil on top of acrylic paint but be careful not to put it over thickly painted acrylic!.!.!.it will most likely peel easily!.)

The only way I can think of for oil and acrylic to ever coexist on the same canvas is if you made an acrylic painting, painted it over with gesso and then created a new painting of oil!. However!.!.!.the other way around would not work!.

Good luck with your paintings! :DWww@QuestionHome@Com

It is not wise to mix oil and acrylic in paintings!. The trouble with painting oil over acrylic is that the acrylic is plastic and air tight not allowing the oil to breath which will lead to cracks in the oil paint over time!. In addition, combining oil and acrylic may compromise the value of the piece!. Most collectors want and have their reasons for purchasing either traditional oil or the contemporary acrylic and tend not to cross those mediums!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!.

Its a good idea that your starting with the oils, as they are the drier out of the two!.

Simply let them dry(does not have to be totally), then when you go over again with the acrylic add a tiny bit of a glossy varnish to each stroke!.

This should do the trick!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Here is the rule- You can paint oil over acrylic but you cannot paint acrylic over oil (the acrylic will peel away) I use acrylic as an underpainting then go over it with oils!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. It won't work!. You can paint oils over acrylics but not acrylics over oils!. I often do backgrounds in acrylics due to the fast drying, then finish my detailed work with oils!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
