Before applying these features to your painting, you should know what they mean: all of them are described at http://www!.oil-painting-techniques!.com/e!.!.!.
Lines enclose forms, and mark either edges where two planes intersect, or the bounding contour of an object seen against a distant background!. More than shapes, lines have an authority of their own, creating movement, integration and texture!. Forms in this picture (that of woman and child, the pillar, the mountians in background, even the clouds, are very clearly bounded by lines!.
Harmony: A peaceful coexistence of the different elements!. In this picture, the living forms and the soft pose of mother -whose right (as you see it) arm falls softly downwards is echoed i!.e!. balanced by the upward line of the mountains in the background!. Her olive green shawl is balanced by green tree in the landscfape!.
Variety: Differences in tone, color, shapes, etc!. create visual interest!. Here you can talk about the skin tones of faces, white dress of child, soft 'living' shapes set against 'hard' lines of bench and pillar,
Balance applies to shapes and masses, which can be symmetrical, asymmetrical, or features which seems somehow to be in balance!. Nothing in this picture is symmetrical i!.e!. if you divided the pic at centre vertically, then an image on one side would have an identical image on the other!. But its asymetrical features appear to balance one another!.
Value or tone is degree of light or dark in a painting!. This value or tone creates the mood of painting (and is very important in this particular work)!. It can e!.g!. have dark tones for threat or mystery), drama (wide tonal range) or emphasis (highlighting the object of interest)!. In this picture, I think that the contrasts of tones does produce a sense of mystery!. Who is the woman!? What is the place!? !.!.!.etc!.
I hope these few pointers will help you in analyzing this rather lovely painting which I don't know and would be obliged if you could tell me who painted it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
