As a graphic designer, I'm going to give you some solid advice!. Learn to draw!.

You don't have to be Michelangelo!. Or fantastic at portraiture, but if you do not know the foundation principles of drawing, you won't be a great designer!. This I promise!.

It's not enough to simply have a computer and software!. In fact, there is a huge difference between those who have comprehensive knowledge about how drawings are composed, perspective, light and shadows, depth, volume, dimension, foreground, foreshortening, color theory, etc, and the average computer hack who just speeds through those computer focused classes advertised on television!.

Sure if you have an innate creative talent, it doesn't matter, you've a gift and every tool you use will generate fantastic work!. But those people are far and few between!. I know!.

But just because you don't draw well, doesn't mean you won't be a good designer!.

It's what you do with the knowledge of the art foundation and how you apply to the realm of design!.

I happen to draw and paint and sculpt and design and more!. What I don't know well, or didn't know well, I spent time learning and perfecting!. It's called practice!.

Right now your hand isn't trained or skilled at perhaps the level you think it needs to be!. Well, there's only one way to get it where you want it!. Draw more!. Train it more!. Don't be afraid of criticism and keep at it!.

Try new things!. Experiment!. Take life drawing classes, take still life classes, take any and every drawing class you can!. Two dimensional design, then 3-D drawing!. Start at the beginning and work up!.

You'll get there!. But you must understand the principals of drawing to be an excellent designer!. Don't let the computer fool you!. It's smoke and mirrors!. Just a tool!. The real talent, the real art lies in the person using the tools!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You don't necessarily have to be a good illustrator (or drawer) to be a graphic designer!. However, it definitely helps to have the training in the field of art!. Try to take some of these studio art classes—such as painting, still life or life drawing, photography and sculpture, just to name a few!. These classes will train you, your eye and your brain to develop sensibility to creativity!.

On a practical side, you'll need to develop the technical skills in design by taking classes such as Adobe Photoshop to learn to manipulate photos and things, Adobe Illustrator to learn to draw with this software and Adobe InDesign to develop layouts, etc!. Typography class is a MUST!. With an exceptional typography skills, you'll unquestionably be set apart from other graphic designers!.

Don't let these classes intimidate you just because you're not yet familiar with them!. As you begin your major in graphic design (or visual communications), your school will assist you in figuring what's required and the classes you'll need to take!. If you want to explore during your freshman year in college, just take some basic art classes like "Intro to Art 101" and see how you enjoy it!.

Absolutely not! You do not have to be a fine artist or illustrator to be a graphic designer!. The main thing you will need to understand is COMPOSITION!. I am a fine artist and illustrator but was a graphic designer for many years!. I did not use one bit of my drawing or painting skills in the field of graphics!. Futhermore, I know graphic designers that are top notch that could not draw a stick figure!. Good luck with your schooling and career!. Learn every program and every thing you can about the field so that you can approach a firm knowing all the software available!. My best to you!Www@QuestionHome@Com
