Question: Can soap be used to clean paint brushes!?
I'm talking about the brushes used for minature painting!.

I know that you have to keep the natural oils in the brush hairs to prevent damage, making chemical cleaners like washing up liquid bad for the brush, but would a bar of soap be acceptable!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Soap can be used to clean water-based paint, but I would recommend using a brush cleaner!. Soap will take out the natural oils of the brush and will shorten the life!. It's called The Masters you can pick it up at Hobby Lobby or Michael's!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Soap is a MUST! (after a rince with the apropriate solvent, water or turp)

A bar of soap is an excellent choice!.

Same for the varnish though I never use a brush when varnishing!. I pour a little at a time on the canvas and with the tip of my finger I make circles until the canvas is done!. No streaking, no hairs!.If you have to use a brush use one you ONLY will use for varnishing and be prepared to throw it out after a job as!.!. well varnish is a ****** to get completely out of your brush without damaging it!. Yes, some professionals don't even bother and throw them out after the job is done!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are using acrylic paint then just water will do!. If you are using oil paint use turpentine or turpenoid to clean your brushes, and if you still can't get it all out then use dish soap to get the excess out!. I'd recommend this over bar soap (so you're not pressing the bristles into the bar of soap!.) If your paint is not oil based, though, there's really no need to use soap!. Your bristles might be stained, but as long as the water runs clean, the bristles are clean!.

p!.s!. if you're using turpentine DO NOT dump it down the drain!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yeah, I agree with Puppy: For oil paint, a solvent is not enough to get all the paint out!. After rinsing in a solvent, you should clean your brushes with soap!. They will last way longer!. also, you can talk a tiny bit of soap and water when you're done cleaning to reshape the bristles into a point!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

bar soap is perfectly acceptable!. For oils all you need to use is turpenoid or ordorless mineral spirits whatever your thinner of choice is while you paint!. You don't need anything fancy or crazy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For water-based paint, yes, and in fact it's a good idea!. For oil-based paint, soap isn't worth beans; you have to use a solvent!. (I use Coleman stove fuel!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com
