No, it is not necessary to have a degree or to go to art school at all!. There are respected artists who are self-taught or largely self-taught!.

But they are in a small minority!. Actually, before there were formal schools that taught art, young aspiring artists would apprentice with established artists, often spending years in their studio learning how to do what they did!. So, they did "go to school," just not the way we do today!.

There are exceptions!. Van Gogh was largely self-taught!. And today there is a thriving market of so-called outsider art which is made mostly by self-taught artists!.

In my experience, most people can only get so far (in the development of their work -- not talking about the market) trying to teach themselves!. And most benefit greatly from serious training!.

On the other hand, on of my favorite paintings that I own was painted by an untrained artist!.

For me, studying formally changed my life!. I was definitely someone who could only get so far trying to teach myself, which I did for years!. But you may be different!. There is rarely only one way to go about something!. If you feel essentially satisfied with your work right now and have no interest in art school, I don't see why you should go!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

NO WAY!. famous artists were learned!. They worked under a master, became apprentices and worked to death to become how great they were!. Artists today are cheap and lazy!. They want all the glory with no work!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
