Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Yes, much better zoom on the SX100 IS, 10x vs 4x!.

Users on dpreview!.com give it many stars, too!. Lower aperture range on the SX100IS, though!. Other than that, they seem to be almost identical in specs, the SX100 is a little heavier!. The popup flash might be a slight advantage!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Other differences:

SX100 only has the LCD display, the A590 has an actual viewfinder!. The LCD could be washed out in certain lighting conditions!.

The SX100 has a faster max shutter speed, 1/2500 vs 1/2000 sec!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
