Most bang for the bux is the Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm AF-S (Canon calls theirs USM), ED lens !.!.!. under $470

And don't get caught up in the megapixel marketing ploy!. Here is what you need to know about pixel counts!.

http://www!.kenrockwell!.com/tech/mpmyth!.h!.!.!.

There is a point where too many pixels can be jammed into a sensor which then can cause noise!. The sweet spot for full frame DSLR's seems to be around 12 MP, but there are so few of them around it may be a few years before the "perfect" count will be established!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

a Mamiya is a wonderful camera, I have one!. but carrying it around without a donkey is a burdensome thing!. I actually hike with mine and a bunch of other equipment!. The camera is inexpensive today, but the lenses are too expensive for the casual user!. My RB67,with a 90mm lens, weighs about 5 pounds and you pretty well have to have a good strong tripod!.

If you want digital, get the one that fits your pocketbook and has the features!. I like the Olympus E510, but the E410 and the new E420 have some good features!. You can probably get a two lens camera within your price range!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Without a doubt the very best SLR you could get in that price range is a Nikon F5 or F4 with a 50mm 1!.8 lens attached!. In fact, not only will this get you the best SLR in that price range, it will buy you one of the best film SLR's (possible exception of the Nikon F6) ever made!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The very best SLR that I can recommend in your price range is the Mamiya RZ67!. Amazing image quality!. This camera does not disappoint!.

If you are interested in miniature formats such as 35mm or APS-C then you should look into the Nikon F4 or perhaps the Canon XTi!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Canon Rebel XTi with 18-55mm kit lens is perfect!. It's about 650, and I own it!. It's GREAT!.

also, if you want to go with the Nikon D40 with kit lens!.!.!. it's only about 500!.!.!. but its also 4 less megapixels!.!.!. and to me is not quite as good!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
